What is a Mission Advocate?

Purpose: Mission advocates are an important part of the “missionary sending team” at Bay Presbyterian Church.  They are to provide care, encouragement, and regular communication with their mission partner so that our missionaries in the midst of the harvest are as effective as possible.  In addition, they are to communicate to BPC on behalf of the mission, their needs and opportunities so that the congregation can respond in appropriate ways to bring glory to God through prayer, resources, and support.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Serving for at least one year as the mission advocate for an outreach ministry (July 1 – June 30th annually), and identifying an apprentice to ultimately move into the advocate role as his/her successor.
  2. Serving directly as an ongoing volunteer with the ministry.  If it is an international partnership, visit the ministry if possible, or help in hosting visitors to BPC from the ministry.
  3. Communicating with the specific ministry on a regular basis, and keeping the staff liaison to that ministry informed of any significant changes, concerns or praises (i.e. staffing, focus of ministry, etc.).
  4. Praying regularly for the mission.
  5. Helping to maintain the Outreach Connections database at BPC.
  6. Submitting to the outreach staff at BPC items about the ministry that should be promoted to the congregation (new or ongoing volunteer opportunities, special fundraisers, resource needs, special prayer needs, unusual circumstances or opportunities to celebrate what God has been doing in and through this mission). 7. Helping to recruit and connect individuals, families or small groups to the ministry when they express an interest in serving for the ministry, creating a support team (when appropriate), and/or help in recruiting participants for mission trips for the mission, if appropriate.
  8. Assisting with providing input to Bay Bridge to Missions and BPC Outreach Staff regarding financial allocations, viability of relationship, and current needs.
